    Discovery, USG Experiences

Submitted by Administrator on Jan 26, 2012

The University System of Georgia Libraries continue to host several WIMBA informational sessions as they do research for their move to a Next Generation Library System.  Session 4 was held on 20 February 2012 (3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and titled: “Discovery, USG Experiences”.  This WIMBA discusssion presented a Panel discussion with various USG institutions represented.  It provided an introduction to Discovery Tools and discussed the implementation experiences of the panel’s USG institutions.

As the USG Libraries begin discussions with respect to Voyager which is a maturing ILS product and nearing the end of its life cycle, it is important to first gather information about the current trends in the library environment with respect to the “digital age”.  As a reminder to USG Librarians, it took the USG Libraries over 2 years to make a decision to move to Voyager and then 3 years to implement Voyager for all USG institutions.  So within the next 2-3 years the USG Libraries need to be prepared to define their direction and their plan for funding, etc.

In addition to the overview (Session 1), there have been sessions on collection management in an information rich environment (Session 2), cloud computing (Session3), and discovery tools (Session 4), plus additional sessions on changes in collection management in some of the USG institutions, and sessions on particular new systems.
