Melanie Sue Byrd

Valdosta State University


Melanie Byrd teaches European and ancient history at Valdosta State University. Her areas of specialization include the French Revolution and Napoleon, nineteenth century Europe, the Ancient Mediterranean, and food in world history. She also teaches the senior seminar in history, and team teaches a freshman introductory course with Deborah Davis on archival research for history students. She has taught in France and England for the USG Study Abroad Program. She has presented numerous papers at the Consortium on the Revolutionary Era, 1750-1850. She recently edited a two-volume encyclopedia, Cooking Through History: A Worldwide Encyclopedia of Food with Recipes and Menus, for ABC-CLIO/Greenwood. She received an MLS from Kent State University in 1985 and a Ph.D in European history from Florida State University.
