Q. What is this project all about?
A. Around May 2017, University System of Georgia Institutions will implement a new library management solution which encompasses a suite of applications. The main applications are Alma and Primo (OPAC). Find out more on this website: GIL Alma Implementation Project Website
Q. Why are we doing this project?
A. Our current application, Voyager, is nearing the end of its life cycle. Alma/Primo will allow our institutions better manage print and digital collections and improve our efficiencies through shared services and cloud opportunities. All while increasing our upgrade opportunities and adding analytic capabilities.
Q. What is Alma?
A. An Ex Libris product, Alma supports the tasks necessary to keep your library in operation. These include acquisitions, cataloging, fulfillment, and assessment. The Alma application is used by your Library staff.
Q. What is Primo (OPAC)?
A. An Ex Libris product, Primo (OPAC) is the application providing the customer interface to an institution’s resources (print, electronic, and digital).
Q. Will GILFind and GIL Classic be available once we have implemented?
A. No, GILFind and GIL Classic will be decommissioned. Primo, the new OPAC/Discovery tool from Ex Libris will replace them.
Q. Will the Universal Catalog (UC) remain?
A. The UC will go away, but similar functionality will continue via Primo. However, there will be differences.
Q. Will EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) remain?
A. Yes, GIL will continue to offer EDS and re-evaluate after the project is complete.
Q. Will SFX remain?
A. SFX, the OpenURL link resolver, will be decommissioned after the implementation in May 2017. Alma will contain a built-in link resolver.
Q. I keep hearing about zones, such as the Institution Zone, the Network Zone, and the Community Zone. What are they?
A. Institution Zone: Contains any bibliographic records not shared for editing purposes with the consortia members in the Network Zone. Also contains all inventory records (holdings & items) for the institution.
A. Network Zone: A shared bibliographic database. One bib record can be shared for editing by all of the participating institutions.
A. Community Zone: TBD
Q. Do you have a link to an Alma Glossary?
A. Yes we do! Here is the Alma Glossary
Q. If I have questions about the project, what should I do?
A. Please contact your Alma project institutional leads. A listing of Alma leads can be found here: GIL Alma Implementation Project Institutional Leads
